I just wanted to say thanks for making the podcast. I'm stuck in Iraq right now and I'm a closet cinemaphile. I have already bored everyone on my team - and my wife, to tears with my desire to think about and dissect films for hours on end.
Although ultimately I liked “No Country” for its filmmaking, I really didn’t care for it much overall. I think the Kobe hamburger analogy summed it up perfectly.
I had a couple of comments/questions if have time:
1. Your comment about "No Country" and whether or not it was a metaphor for the Iraq war. I agree that the film was not a metaphor for the Iraq war – I’m here and I never got that feeling from the movie. However, is it possible that its the other way around?
I.E. - Are the kind of unresolved feelings caused by the war, a lot of violence with no real resolutions, leading people to want to project these elements onto the film – sort of a backwards rationalization?
2. Although I can understand your comments about wanting to see less violence against women in general, I was a bit curious why you wanted to see less of it in film?
I.E. - Please don’t take this question as argumentative or disrespectful, I just want to explore the ideas here. In real life, I’d love to see less violence against everyone, but in film – I view it as a question of art. I only ask if the violence in question is used effectively to make it a better film. I’m a feminist, but an equalitarian first.
Is this the best place to blog with other SYMT fans? I'm old and not very tech savy about blogging and other computer related stuff.
hey KurosawaFan (awesome name BTW), Thanks for listening to the show, I'm glad you're enjoying it.
It's not an opinion I hold, but I think what people mean when they see an Iraq war metaphor in NCFOM is that Tommy Lee Jones represents a traditional law enforcement type of guy trying to make sense of a killer who operates without an identifiable purpose or moral compass.
I agree with your take on it, I think people are frustrated with the war and the feelings that their frustration is being ignored and it's natural to read a common feeling in pop culture.
I think it was Cathy that spoke about this more eloquently, but it's an opinion I share so I'll give it a go. I think her response was two-pronged, she was surprised that in a film with so much violence and gore that the deaths of women take place off screen (and in the grand scheme of the movie, aren't as violent). This is something the Coens have (in my opinion) always handled with excellent finesse.
I think there's an argument to be made that in a culture where images of women as victims seems to be non-stop in every venue of life it becomes easier for people to discount the seriousness when those crimes happen to real people in real life.
I think this is as a good a place as any to talk to SMYT listeners (and co-hosts!) Please keep in touch and let us know what you think of the show and the films we review.
Thanks for taking the time to thoughtfully respond to my question/comments. Shortly after I posted it, I realized I was commenting on SYMT 11 when you two were busy making SYMT 20. (It's kind of like being stuck in a time warp here as “No Country” just hit the "Hajji Marts" over here). I was afraid the comments I was referencing might not be remembered as so many shows have been made since then.
